We recognise that renewable energy is still very much in its infancy and still not widely understood. However, we also recognise that over 90% of consumers recognise the need to do something about climate change and the effects of burning fossil fuel. It is also a stated aim of the government to have 10%-15% of all energy to be supplied from renewable sources by 2010. A tall order!

The information on this website is designed to help anyone looking to build their own home or renovate an existing home to embrace sustainable and renewable energy technology. While we recognise there is plenty of information about products, theory, costs and legislation on the Internet, very little of this can be construed to be impartial relevant advice for consumers, so we have produced this guide in hope to address this issue - looking at four main areas of renewables: wind, solar, ground source heating and rainwater harvesting. In addition to considering the merits and drawbacks of each we will look at the planning process, grants and incentives available, current relevant legislation, initial cost outlay and payback (return on investment).
We all know that fossil fuels are both finite and a major contributor to global warming and as both individuals and Government are beginning to recognize unless we all start to address these issues today then we are storing up serious problems for our children and our children’s children. Of course, we live in the here and now and any sustainable solution must be affordable with reasonable payback periods. This guide will help to show how renewable energy can be financially viable in both the medium and long term.

“Sustainability means meeting our needs today without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”
It is worth remembering that when considering a renewable energy solution, it is nearly always site specific. What will work well in one location will not always work in the next. Planning in the right renewable energy technology requires very careful consideration of your site, the property you are building or renovating, and the way you live in that property.
